Due to the loss of the RX-78-01 01 Gundam and the RX-78-02 White Gundam in the attack on Side 7 by Char Aznable, the “Red Comet," the Earth Federation Forces were forced to drastically change their plans for mobile suit mass production. Instead of the highly versatile Gundam, they opted to use the RX-77 Guncannon, which was designed for bombardment, as a template for mass production. After fine-tuning it with production in mind, the Federation Forces completed their first formally adopted machine, the RGM-79 Light-Type Guncannon.
At the end of the One Year War, this became the backbone of the Federation Forces, and was deployed in the Battle of Luna I and during the fighting at Solomon. Some of these Light-Type Guncannons were assigned to Federation Forces ace pilots, including Sayla Mass, who was known for destroying the Big Zam. Its coloring was changed to white, blue, and red tricolors, showing that this was a personalized machine. It's recorded that it broke into Solomon after it began its descent towards Granada, and engaged Char Aznable's Red Gundam in combat. Apparently, it used a hammer in the course of this battle.
