After Char Aznable's capture of the RX-78-02 White Gundam, the Earth Federation Forces' mobile suit plan was forced to undergo a major change of course. The R Project had produced the Gundam, Guncannon, and Guntank, three prototypes that used the Core Block System, but the Federation Forces continued their development based on the Guncannon instead of the Gundam.
The result was the RGM-79 Light-Type Guncannon, which combined the Guncannon's bombardment capabilities with close combat features based on surviving data from the Gundam. Luna Titanium alloy was newly adopted as an armor material for ease of production. It was also for production reasons that it was given only a single beam cannon as its main weapon.
Completed and mass-produced at the end of the One Year War, this machine was deployed in the Battle of Luna II and during the fighting at Solomon. It has been confirmed that some of these machines had different coloring.
Beam Rifle
The beam rifle created for the Guncannon can also be used as a carried weapon by the Light-Type Guncannon.
Beam Cannon
A large firearm mounted on the backpack. It can also be fired from a crawling position, while taking cover behind objects such as rocks.
Beam Saber
A melee weapon mounted on the backpack. This is an indispensable weapon for close combat with other mobile suits, and is capable of piercing and destroying their cockpits.
