When First Gundam was (partially) reanimated for the Sega Saturn
The idea of Sunrise remaking First Gundam isn’t something I’ve ever contemplated seriously, but 30 years ago we caught a glimpse of what a remake could look like — with a glorious 90s anime aesthetic. The 1995 Sega Saturn game, simply titled ‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ featured a collection of specially commissioned animated sequences, and they’re a real treat.
I’ll dive deeper into this game at one stage in the future, but for today, please enjoy this splash of stills. These were sourced via the Mobile Suit Gundam Memorial Box Blu-ray set, which included higher-res exports of these scenes as a wonderful extra.
Whilst the original game was a Japan-exclusive, an English-language fan translation dropped earlier this year! For more info on the patch, check out Shadowmask’s page.
If you’re thinking that all this looks familiar — you may not be wrong. The animated sequences were reused in PS2 games such as ‘Journey to Jaburo’.
If you’re curious to see how it looked when animated, here’s an upload of the opening and ending sequences.
