The Final Missing Piece in the Sinanju's Lineage
In Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative (hereinafter referred to as βNTβ), the Sinanju Stein was chosen as the machine to be piloted by Cyber-Newtype Zoltan Akkanen. How did this Mobile Suit, which can be said to be the enemyβs secondary unit, come to be?
The Sinanju Stein was a test unit developed to measure the strength and tracing abilities of Psycho-Frames as a part of the UC Project. The fact that two units were manufactured was revealed in the second volume of the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (hereinafter referred to as βUC") novel series before the animated series was released. Both units were stolen by the Sleeves, and one was modified into a machine dedicated to Full Frontal. The animated series and novel conclude without revealing the whereabouts and state of the other Sinanju Stein.
Katoki: This may be a forgotten fact, but the design of the Stein was drawn after the Sinanju was created. However, it was the other way around in the series; two Stein units were brought to the Neo Zeon and one of them was modified to create Frontal's red Sinanju. Therefore, I decided that the Stein that didn't undergo major modifications or receive a red color scheme would become Zoltan's unit, which would face off against the Narrative Gundam. This is the reason why the Neo Zeon, enemies of the protagonist, use a Stein with an angular silhouette.
The Phenex and Neo Zeong were created for the animated series, and Harutoshi Fukui wrote another story to incorporate them into the novel series. This took shape as the Phoenix Hunting story included in the 11th volume of the UC novel series (*1) and is an episode that occurred around the same time as the events featured in Volume 8. Following this, a project launched to create an animated movie of the events following UC, and Fukui wrote the script for a completely new movie (NT) based on The Postwar War and Phoenix Hunting from Volume 11. Zoltan Akkanen was created as the antagonist of the movie, and the Sinanju Stein appeared as a unit that he piloted and the core unit of the second Neo Zeong.
Katoki: To differentiate it from the Sinanju, the first Stein was designed without βsleeves." Therefore, we added sleeves when creating the settings for the Stein piloted by Zoltan. It is also true that despite NT being an animated movie, the protagonist's MS went through three different designs throughout its runtime, and most of our resources went to creating them. For this Stein, minor changes were made to its Rifle and Shield, the Naginata was extended, and adjustments were made to the weapon gimmicks that worked in conjunction with the II Neo Zeong.
The protagonist's Narrative Gundam had a base body that was armed with A, B, and C-Packs equipment, and slight modifications were made to the Armed Armor DE on the Unicorn Gundam 03 (Phenex).
Katoki: The phoenix is a keyword that often comes up in the movie, but the action-packed moments and eye-catching scenes all focus on the protagonist's new Narrative Gundam. Therefore, the Sinanju Stein was its perfect counterpart and was chosen as its rival unit.
Ver.Ka has a lineup that includes items that take on daring challenges, as well as those that focus on intricate details. This is the second Sinanju Stein to be released in the Ver.Ka series and it is packed with technology cultivated from the MG, HG, and RG Sinanju-type Mobile Suits.
Katoki: In the 2000s when we began planning for the UC series, we thought that applying stickers would be a good enough solution to recreate the designs of the chest and sleeves unique to Frontal's Neo Zeon Mobile Suits. However, the RG Sinanju was released after a while, and the decorations on its collars and sleeves were reproduced with color-divided parts despite it being a 1/144 scale kit. GUNPLA technology has improved to a point where things that were thought to be impossible during the planning stage of the UC series are now possible. It would be fun if we get to see other Neo Zeon Sleeves Mobile Suits as colorful Iropla kits in the future.
