After Char Aznable captured the mobile suit RX-78-02 Gundam from the Earth Federation Forces, it was analyzed by the Principality of Zeon forces, and meanwhile modified for Char's exclusive use.
Now repainted in Char's red personal colors, it was renamed the gMS-Ξ± Red Gundam. On the assumption that it would be used by someone with Newtype abilities (Char), which were then being researched, the Principality forces experimentally incorporated an Alpha-type Psycommu to improve the connection between pilot and machine, as well as Psycommu-linked wireless guided terminals called βbits.β These additions were components of a Newtype machine that the Principality forces had been separately developing.
This machine was deployed at the end of the One Year War together with the MAN-03 Kikeroga, but it went missing, along with Char himself, due to a phenomenon called βZeknova" which took place during the Second Battle of Solomon. Its whereabouts have been completely unknown ever since, but in U.C.0085 it suddenly reappears in the vicinity of Side 6, piloted by a boy named Shuji Ito.
Weaponry
Head Vulcan
Projectile weapons installed in the sides of the head. These are designed to fire shells through multiple rotating barrels. giving them excellent rapid-fire capabilities. Cartridge cases are ejected as shells are fired.
Hammer
A melee weapon which ends with a thruster-equipped metal ball. This is connected to a grip via a chain. allowing the ball to be hurled at enemy machines, or the chain to entangle them.
Beam Saber
High-output beam weapons mounted on the backpack. These are mounted so that the grips protrude from the shoulders, making it possible to swiftly draw them with the manipulators for use.
Beam Rifle
A ranged weapon operated via the manipulator. The beam it fires is powerful enough to destroy a mobile suit with a direct hit. It appears to have carried this ever since its time in the Federation Forces.
Bit
Wireless guided terminals designed to be controlled via Psycommu. They are equipped with beam cannons and thrusters for propulsion, and multiple bits can be operated simultaneously to perform all-range attacks. Though this machine can carry a maximum of six bits, when it reappears in U.C.0085, it is equipped with only two.
Shield
A large shield that can cover the entire chest. A Zeon crest is inscribed on its surface. Though the machine still has its shield when it appears in U.C.0085, the Zeon crest has deteriorated over time.
